Houston Pastor Keion Henderson gives insight to his new book, ‘Lazy Love’ and speaks about status of Lighthouse Church (2024)

HOUSTON – World-renowned leader and senior pastor of The Lighthouse Church and Ministries has written a new book intended to help readers strengthen their relationships with family, partners, friends, and others while finding a deeper satisfaction by learning to love better.

Pastor Keion Henderson’s newest work, ‘Lazy Love’, delves into relationship dynamics, spiritual growth, and the necessity of active love in one’s everyday life.

Just one day after his book was released, Pastor Henderson stopped by the KPRC 2 studios to chat with our Moriah Ballard. He emphasized that ‘Lazy Love’ encourages readers to overcome complacency in their traditional relationships, advocating for a more intentional and proactive approach to love.

“We all learned to love from our parents. Every baby learns to love from our parents. Now, once we are loved by somebody who has gone through an imperfect circ*mstance, the truth is (that) we inherently take that trauma on ourselves. And we love people the way we were loved,” Henderson said. “Well, sometimes in life, like I did when I met my wife, somebody comes along and loves the imperfect version of you. You see, if I have to be perfect for you to love me, that’s lazy. You have to love me in spite of my flaws. Like I have to love you in spite of yours.”

Henderson added that it’s important for you and whoever you are in connection with to find common ground while bringing the best of yourselves to the relationship.

“Somebody asked me, ‘What do you believe about this 50/50 thing as it relates to relationships?’ I totally disagree with the premise because if you bring 50 and I bring 50, what happens when you wake up one day and life has been terrible and you only have 30? Do I only bring 50? And then we have a 20% deficit. I believe that it is my job and your job to bring whatever’s necessary. So if you’ve got 20, I’ve got 80 today. Tomorrow, you’ve got 80. I’ll bring the 20. We’ve got to meet each other where we can, not just in the middle, but where we can.”

Within the chapters, Henderson unpacks the four kinds of love mentioned in the Bible—eros, or attraction; phileo, or friendship; storge, or familial; and agape, or spiritual love—and shows readers how each shapes our relationships and our lives. He also encourages readers to uncover the unhealthy practices that often lead to damaged or broken relationships and helps readers break free of the patterns that keep us from loving well.

As he promotes his new book, Pastor Henderson is still working hard here in the Houston area as he and his congregation are now faced with rebuilding his church.

After the catastrophic events that came from Hurricane Beryl in the Houston area in July, The Lighthouse Church experienced irreparable damage to their building in Humble.

When asked how he continues to remain hopeful and adapt in the face of adversity, Pastor Keion said it hasn’t been much of an adaptation.

“It rains on the just as well as the unjust. I wake up every morning knowing it could be good. I also wake up every morning knowing it could be bad. I am not faltering because of my circ*mstances. I’ve got the faith to make it through it. And that’s what I’m teaching our congregation,” Henderson said. “Because while our building is in disarray, our church is still open. The church hasn’t been affected. We still have our members. Nobody died in the storm. We haven’t gotten any fatalities. We’re still happy. We’re still healthy. We’re still whole. We’re still feeding the hungry. We’re still clothing the naked. And as of the time of this interview, we still have 700 kids coming to our back-to-school program this Friday. The church is wide open. That building will be replaced. You know, we’ll get a new roof, we’ll get new carpet, we’ll get new floors. But the souls are still intact. So, what’s there to be sad about?”

The Lighthouse Church is currently holding services at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church every Sunday at 7 p.m.
